Sikh Turbans

The Sikh Religion came into being in the year 1699 A.D. by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Along with 5 kakaar's he gave his sikhs a specific identity i.e. Turban and from that day onwards Turban became and integeral part of a sikh life.

Though tying a Turban and its style depends upon person to person, the following general steps will guide you as to how you should tie the Turban.

How to do pooni to the Turban Or Preparing the Turban cloth before tying

Open the Turban cloth and hold one corner of the Turban with your right hand and ask your helper to do the same from the other end. (i.e. you and your helper will be holding the opposite corners of the Turban). Now give little stretch to the Turban and with your left hand flip the Turban cloth towards inside and start folding it inside with your left hand. Ask your helper to do the same. Now tie 3 or 4 temperory nods to the Turban cloth so that the 'Pooni' doesnot open. Open these nods one by one as you start tying the Turban.

Tying the 'fifty' or 'Patka'

It depends upon you that whether you want to tie a fifty or patka. You should tie the fifty or patka in such a way that it should cover upper part of your forehead.(i.e. cover around 40% of your upperpart of forehead with fifty or patka)

Tying the Turban

Now stand infront of the mirror and place the Turban on your left hand side. The basic thing we have to do is that the Turban should go up from left hand side and comes down towards the right hand side.

Pick one end of the Turban and hold it in your mouth. When you do so the corner of the Turban will be pointing towards your right side. Make your Turban go below from your left ear. After you pass it from your left ear, start moving it upwards so that it should come at the top and center of your forehead and then take the first 'lar' cover your left ear. When you bring down the first 'lar' of the Turban, keep it along your left eye and then cover your left ear with it. You have now successfully placed the first lar.

Now as you have covered your left ear with the first lar of the Turban, start moving it from back of your head to the right side of the head. Place it at a reasonable height on the right hand side of your head (or you can say that the top of the right hand side of your head).

Now bring it close to top of your forehead and place it little above the first lar(around one inch) which you have placed earlier and then start bringing it down over the left hand side. Use your thumb from bottom to give the second lar a little direction so that it should come to the left hand side, little above the first lar. You have now placed your second lar of the Turban.

Move the Turban again from back side of your head and bring it to the right hand side of your head. Place the Turban over the right hand side over the pervious right hand side lar. Again bring it close to the top of your forehead and place it little above the second lar(around one inch) and bring it down by giving a little direction by using thumb from bottom. You have placed the third lar .

You have to repeat this procedure again. The total lar of the Turban will depend upon the total length of the Turban. While you place the other lars of the Turban you will see the Turban is going upwards from left hand side and is coming down from the right hand side.

At last when there are only two 'lars' remaining. You have to place the second last lar on the top of your right hand side of head. It should cover half part of your Turban on the right hand side.

The last lar on the right hand side should be placed along your right eye and should cover the remaining part on the right hand side of your head. And as you reach to the top of your forehead put the last lar into the Turban from the top and center of the Turban.

Now take out the cloth from your mouth which you are holding when you started tying the Turban. Move it towards back of your head. Then from top of your head pull it little out (Remember you don't pull it out much so that it goes under the Turban from behind). Open that part of Turban cloth from the Top and cover your head. Then pull that lar from behind your back neck and put it into the Turban.

Your have successfully tied the Turban

A perfect Turban should look clean. The height of left and right hand side of the Turban should be same. Your fifty or patka will be seen in the reverse 'V' shape.
